What’s the worst that could happen?

As you have noticed, I’ve been absent for a while. Partially, I’ve been unmotivated, lazy, and stubborn. The other part was me being on vacation. I was sleeping the past week on the beach in a tent, it’s something that my inlaws have been doing for the past 30+ years during easter week.

It’s ok to start over…As long as you don’t quit…

It’s been done, and there is no going back. I have managed to run a 5K, in a decent time…actually it doesn’t even matter…fast, slow, slower…point is, I did it. My first 5K without any breaks… I haven’t done that in what seems to be forever….(15 years, pretty shameful).

Couple of weeks ago, I got fitted for some new gear. Got me and the hubby some awesome running kicks. The paradox of choice is what drives me crazy everytime. Luckily, there is always help when you needed. Out of the thousands many brands, types, colors, functionalities, I have managed to get one that is right for me, my feet, my built, my running style. Let’s get back to the game…

Besides the doctor’s orders that I have been keeping myself to, there was some distractions these last few weeks, that kept me busy. We have been celebrating Carnival for the past 60 years on this island. And this year was again one on the biggest celebrations of the year. People fly from all over the world to indulge in the festivities, either as a spectator or as a participant. My brother flew in from SF to join the parades and dance for hours on end in the parades. Me, on the other hand… was suffering from back pain, and was on orders to be calm, be smart and behave… no Carnival dancing for 6 hours straight…

Go ahead! Do the bike thing.

 After my no-activity weekend, a follow up visit to the chiropractor on Monday reveals that I am still not ready for high-impact activities.

Verdict number 2: – NO activities for the week,

                                       – NO jumping during Carnival activities

So, while avoiding high-impact sports I turn to the thing I have been avoiding, biking. It is awesome, I totally forgot the feeling of being on a bike.  I am happy and now, I want to do it again, and again, and again. Scheduling a weekly biking and swimming hour into my training schedule, will compensate for dropping the extra days of running. Obviously my spine needs me to take it easier on myself. Hopefully, after my chiropractic visit today I will get cleared for running next week. I am staring to miss running, after years of not doing it… 😉

The verdict, doctor’s orders…

As I am reaching the end of my first training schedule, I feel happy and confident that I have made it, this far without quitting. I am a quitter, I love to leave thing unfinished… That sewing project, is still waiting. My career as an artist, is still waiting on that portfolio… let’s not talk about that college degree, which is missing only my thesis, the biggest and hardest part. But this I am confident I can handle. Monday I did my first ever 2.75 miles, without many walking breaks, I was exhilarated. I could have gone the whole 5K, was it not for the training schedule telling me that’s the distance for this week, and the fact that it would mean, a longer walk back to my car. Trail and Error….

Sometimes it’s more like being stubborn and pay for it later…I know better, but sometimes I have these laps in good judgement. Like a few days ago, I was pretty busy all afternoon, so automatically upon reaching home, I go eat… I’m starving naturally, and so it begins:

Eat!Drink. Indulge. Change. Hop in bed! Nap, Nap, Nap…Wake up, Change, Go Run!

Week 4 of running is going awesome!

I like myself…the amount of self-love is a bit nauseating, I am awesome! Slowly and steadily adding distance to my runs, it feels like a piece of cake, sometimes more like a slap in the face… a death wish… but then when it’s al over, I’m revived, and ready for the next training session…

What I am struggling with though, is to find the courage to get back on the bike… The road, my enemy, my archenemy scares me… OK, not much so the road, as the amount of hills, the abusive wind, the scorching sun and the traffic 😦

Flashback Restday…

It’s days like these that I miss the winter… and the excitement of the slopes and new sports…

I woke up feeling guilty… like my day will mean nothing… yes I know rest day is vital. Repeat: VITAL! But the feeling does not go away…

Drop the kids off at school. Breakfast! Change! Off to work! Pick kids up! Back to work!

Job done…Go home… and now… what do I do with that extra time I have in my day today… Let’s do some housework chores…nahhhh maybe not… Overdue paperwork… nah…

Nothing feels right….ohhh it’s the guilt speaking again… it kills me…

I want to go out there and do some running… I love my progress, I am even amazed proud of it, of myself.

 

How do you cope with rest days? Will it get better?

Sunset or Sunrise runs?

So, the first week of training went on by pretty smoothly,  waking up early was not really  problem anymore, given I went to bed early too. The second week however appears to be a bit troublesome… I need to wake up earlier in order to put longer distances in my training. For some reason, my own personal zoo (4cats/3 dogs) are deciding to have a dance-off/karaoke/WWIII  at my sleeping expense around 3AM, every morning….EVERY!

Up! Out of bed! Outside! Breakup Zoo party! Back to bed!….. Repeat!

Needless to say there goes my morning routine, let’s adjust the routine and take it for a sunset workout…Which I might say, is not too bad…

I do live on the island of a 1000 sunsets….all different, all the time…

The only problem, I do have with sunset trainings, is that all the popular and the unpopular spots are always crowded…

So tell me, what’s your preference, early mornings, afternoons or it doesn’t really matter?

Do we run in the rain?

Alarm! Snooze! Get out of bed! Gear on! Out the Door!

Back in the house, grab my running jacket as it seems to be unusually cold this morning… even more eerie is the degree of darkness. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s still winter and daytime comes in a bit later than usual…Maybe it’s the rain clouds that I cannot see…

It really doesn’t matter, off I go for my short warmup run… The streets are quiet, in fact so is the whole neighborhood… If it was up to me, it would stay like that all the time, during daytime my street turns into a circus-like playground with screaming kids and Tweens all over the place… Quiet moment of solitude…forget about that here…

Continuing my run… nice and quiet, breathing fresh morning air… I feel good, fresh, relaxed… this is looking to be a good morning, thus also a good day. As I get to the edge of the neighborhood, I turn around and head back. Half way going back… the wind picks up and gets chillier…. and then it hits me….water! Rain water…

I keep running as it starts to pour, I manage to find a dry corner at a neighbors house… I wait it out… And I keep running, the rain starts again… I find another house to hide at….and keep running, I’m thinking, my own house is not that far, I’ll make a run for it….

BAM!! Just like that the downpour starts, heavy heavy rain… while I’m in the middle of the street running towards my house (me and my luck)… I slightly miscalculated the distance, and the fact that it’s an uphill climb to my house…I end my run early by sprinting uphill to the refuge of my house, and a dry towel…

Next time, should I just finish my scheduled run despite the rain, or do we not run in the rain?
